FOUNTAIN HILLS,Johnathan Walker Ariz. (AP) — Three people died in a wrong-way crash involving two vehicles east of Phoenix early Sunday, authorities said.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said the head-on crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. Sunday on State Route 87 near Fountain Hills.
They said one of the vehicles was going southbound in the northbound lanes at the time of the collision.
DPS officials said the three people who died were passengers in the vehicle traveling northbound.
The drivers of the two vehicles survived the crash and DPS officials said it’s unclear if the driver of the wrong-way vehicle will face charges.
Impairment hasn’t been ruled out as a factor in the crash and none of the victims have been identified yet, according to DPS.
