WATERLOO, Ill. (AP) — One man was killed and another was injured in southern Illinois when a barn partially collapsed into a burn pit and caught fire, authorities said.
A man called 911 at 9:35 a.m. Saturday and said a dilapidated barn outside Waterloo that was being torn down had collapsed on his two co-workers, Monroe County Coroner Bob Hill said.
A deputy coroner pronounced a 58-year-old man from Wildwood, Missouri, dead at the scene, Hill said. The man’s name was not immediately released.
An autopsy was planned for Sunday, he said.
Another man was transported by ambulance to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Hill said.
Monroe County Sheriff Neal Rohlfing said a company had been hired to dismantle the barn and it caught fire after falling onto a burn pit during its collapse.
Waterloo is 22 miles (35 km) southeast of St. Louis, Missouri.
